Karachi Vocational Training Centre (KVTC) works towards the development of Intellectually Challenged children. Their mission is simple. They have a firm belief in the fact that the mentally challenged; people who have been shunned by society as being incapable of doing any sort of work can continually develop, learn new skills, and become morecompetent people who can play a role in society, regardless of their disability.
As the first initiative taken by the InLUV (Integrated League of Unilever Volunteers) team to work with KVTC, a trip was organized to their premises. The group comprised of a total of 10 volunteers belonging to various departments from the HO along with a member from our leadership team, the Ambassador for “People with Special Abilities”.
The student body at KVTC comprises of 142 students, not just children but people from all ages. KVTC has established a well structured program which provides students with a combination of academics and skill development training. What is impressive is the diverse skill set taught at KVTC, including block printing, candle making, carpentry, tie and dye, tailoring, physical exercise and arts. KVTC also runs a shop outlet near Nisar Shaheed managed by trainees.
KVTC has placed over 350 graduates at various jobs in the city, ranging from sales to office management to specialized craftsmen in carpentry, tie-dying, block printing, mirror painting etc.
The Unilever Management Trainee batch of 2010 organised a bake sale and exhibition which was aimed at generating awareness about the skills of these children. There were wonderful displays of their meticulous work ranging from fashionable ready to wear clothes, intricate pieces of dazzling jewellery to little pots and candles.
The KVTC bake sale and exhibition helped raise Rs. 44,725 through raffle ticket and food sales alone, which was later matched by the company.
