Development Nutrition Manager

Based in Durban, I work on the spreads category in a regional role that covers Africa, the Middle East and Turkey. One part of my job involves supporting the development of nutrition and health-related communication targeted at health influencers (scientists, health authorities and healthcare professionals). This material helps bring them the science behind our innovations.

I am also responsible for training and supporting country nutritionists in their launch and post-launch activities. These are the people who actually go out and talk to the health influencers in their local countries. I ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and materials to field any questions related to the scientific aspects of new innovation.

The other aspect of my job is a global role in Unilever’s partnership with the World Food Programme. Dubbed ‘Together for Child Vitality’, the goal of this partnership is to improve the quantity and quality of school meals that the WFP provides to impoverished school-aged children in Ghana, Kenya, Indonesia and Colombia. I give technical and strategic leadership, ensuring all country plans are properly defined and implemented.

I find the whole area of public health very exciting. Not many Unilever nutritionists get to work on such projects and I am learning every day, especially about partnership management which has proven to be the most challenging aspect. Unilever alone cannot solve the world’s greatest nutritional and health problems. I am sold on the idea of joining forces with other organisations to make a genuine, lasting difference.
