The Unilever Food and Health Research Institute supports Unilever to help people to feel good, look good and get more out of life by driving innovation in the area of food and health.

One of the ways that the Unilever Food and Health Research Institute is contributing to the Vitality Mission is by driving the Unilever Nutrition Enhancement programme. We fully integrate this programme in our innovation process together with quality attributes such as safety, convenience and taste and we focus on reducing levels of saturated fat, salt, sugar and trans fat in our products.

We have based these nutrition benchmarks on established international dietary guidelines. We also use these benchmarks in our claims validation procedure that takes into account if a food promising a health benefit is contributing to a healthy diet.

As part of the Unilever Vitality Mission, we want to meet the everyday needs for nutrition, hygiene and personal care with brands that help people feel good, look good and get more out of life. Our consumer insight group identified, in close co-operation with our marketing colleagues, 6 key consumer aspirations in the area of Vitality:

Making the healthy choice an easy choice

At the Unilever Food and Health Research Institute we want to make the healthy choice an easy choice. This requires a thorough understanding of the real health issues for our consumers and technical solutions to deal with these. It also requires a deep consumer insight into consumer behaviour, preferences and aspirations to turn these technical solutions into popular consumer products with appealing benefit claims. Pro.activ, a plant sterol-enriched product range that actively reduces blood cholesterol and Knorr Vie that is a convenient and tasty option to boost your fruit and vegetable intake are both examples of our innovations.
