How Unilever is improving livelihoods across Pakistan

At Unilever Pakistan, we believe that business growth and social progress go hand in hand. The people who grow, make, distribute and sell our products are essential to our success, and helping them thrive is critical to building a resilient and sustainable future.

Our livelihoods agenda focuses on three key areas:

  • Advancing fair and decent livelihoods across our value chain
  • Inclusive Workplace & Belonging
  • Strengthening small businesses and retail communities

For Unilever, improving livelihoods is a vital part of building a more sustainable future. All our full-time employees earn a Living Wage, and we continue to advocate for wider adoption of living wage across our value chain. By raising awareness and driving collaboration, we are helping create fairer livelihoods and more resilient communities.

Because when people thrive, communities prosper, businesses grow stronger, and progress becomes truly sustainable.

Advancing Decent Livelihoods

Advancing Decent Livelihoods

Our aim is simple yet far-reaching: to help ensure that everyone who contributes to the creation and delivery of our products can earn a decent livelihood.

This commitment builds on Unilever For Pakistan, an initiative launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the health, wellbeing, and economic resilience of communities across the country. Today, it has evolved into a movement focused on creating sustainable opportunities and improving livelihoods across our value chain.

Championing Fair Living Wages

Championing Fair Living Wages

Unilever Pakistan already pays a living wage to 100% of its full-time employees and continues to advocate for wider adoption of fair wage practices across business and industry.

Recognizing that no single organization can address this challenge alone, we have also championed collective action through initiatives such as the Business Coalition for Living Wage, bringing together businesses and stakeholders to promote greater awareness and momentum around fair pay.

Through our #LiveableIndependence campaign, we highlighted the daily realities faced by many working Pakistanis and encouraged a broader conversation on the role living wages play in enabling financial independence and social mobility.

Strengthening Small Retailers

Small retailers form the backbone of Pakistan's retail economy and play a critical role in connecting our products with consumers nationwide.

Through our partnership with Akhuwat Foundation, we have facilitated loans for more than 1,100 retailers, including over 160 women-led businesses, helping strengthen local entrepreneurship and drive economic growth within communities.

Together for a More Inclusive Future

At Unilever, diversity, equity, and inclusion are more than values. They are a catalyst for innovation, growth, and better decision-making. By creating a workplace where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic self, we unlock the full potential of our people and drive meaningful impact for consumers, communities, and society.

Empowering Women Through Entrepreneurship

Economic empowerment has long been a catalyst for lasting social change, particularly for women who have traditionally faced barriers to income generation and financial inclusion.

Launched in 2012, the Guddi Baji programme enabled women in rural communities across Pakistan to become entrepreneurs and micro-business owners. By connecting women directly with consumers and local markets, the initiative created sustainable income opportunities while strengthening their economic participation and decision-making power within households and communities.

Over time, the programme evolved beyond product distribution. Through partnerships such as JazzCash, participants gained access to digital financial services, helping advance financial inclusion and support greater economic independence.

By the conclusion of the programme, more than 8,000 women had been trained and enabled as entrepreneurs, leaving a lasting legacy of economic empowerment and community development.

Why It Matters

Pakistan continues to face significant economic challenges, with rising living costs placing increasing pressure on workers, families, and small business owners.

For us, livelihoods are not separate from sustainability. Strong businesses depend on thriving people and communities. When individuals have access to fair incomes, economic opportunities, and the skills to succeed, they are better able to support their families, invest in their futures, and contribute to stronger local economies.

By improving livelihoods, we are helping build a more resilient value chain while contributing to long-term social and economic development in Pakistan.

Our other sustainability priorities

Plastics

A wrapper can only be recycled if someone actually collects, and for packaging to be reusable and recyclable, effective collection and processing systems must exist first. We're investing in that collection system so plastic stays in use, not in the ocean or a landfill.

Climate

Unilever Pakistan now runs on 97% renewable electricity, cutting operational emissions by 95% since 2015 from our factories and powers we buy, primarily through our transition to renewable energy and energy efficiency programs.

Nature

Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. Unilever Pakistan's Water Stewardship Program is working to replenish 192.5 million litres of water every year, through watercourse lining, recharge wells, and community awareness on responsible water use.
