Unilever contributes Rs. 113 Million towards flood relief and rehabilitation

Karachi , August 19, 2010 - Unilever, the global leader in consumer products, has committed € 1 million (US$ 1.28 million, Rs. 113 million) towards flood relief and rehabilitation in Pakistan. This will be channelled through five leading NGOs – World Food Programme, Unicef, Oxfam, Save the Children Fund and Population Services International - which are actively engaged in relief activities in the flood affected areas. Unilever’s contributions will be in cash and products from its portfolio of soap, detergents, toothpaste, shampoo, tea, glucose drinks and food items.

In Pakistan, where Unilever has been present since 1948, and in many of the 80 countries that it operates in globally, employee contributions will be matched by the company to augment the aforementioned contribution. Additionally in Pakistan, its brand Lifebuoy is running a public service TV campaign urging people to unite and donate generously to the cause. In over 500 airings on 6 popular channels, the Healthy Hoga Pakistan message will reach an estimated audience of 50 million. Unilever Pakistan logistics and sales teams are working closely with local administrations and communities in the worst affected areas.

At this critical time when Pakistan needs help from home and abroad, Unilever stands firmly behind the people of Pakistan. Brands like Lifebuoy, Lux, Surf, Lipton and Supreme are household names. Everyday, millions of Pakistanis use Unilever products. Through four factories and twelve co-manufacturers, Unilever makes 95% of what it sells in the country. There are 2000 people on its payroll; another 5000 are employed in the value chain that ensures that its products reach every village in the country. In 2009 Unilever paid Rs. 11.7 Billion in taxes to the Pakistan government.

Unilever Pakistan’s ongoing CSR commitments principally cover education and health, through partners that include The Citizens Foundation, The Kidney Centre, The Aga Khan University and Hospital, Layton Rehmatullah Benevolent Trust, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund and Idara-e-Taleem-O-Aagahi.
