Healthy Pakistan Mission

According to the WHO, 3.5 million children every year, die from respiratory infections and diarrhea-related diseases before the age of 5. This is equal to a jumbo jet full of less than 5 olds crashing every hour of the day! 80% of all these infections spread through our hands.

The prevention is in our hands.Did you know that washing hands with soap cuts the incidence of diarrhea by up to 25% and respiratory infections by 19%? In essence, fighting germs can be quite simple. As the country’s leading antibacterial soap brand, Lifebuoy’s aim is to educate people on health and hygiene in Pakistan and to make them aware of the importance of washing hands with soap. In 2006, Lifebuoy launched a mission to make Pakistan healthy (‘Healthy Hoga Pakistan!’) and to educate students about the importance of hand washing in schools all over Pakistan.

Lifebuoy’s Healthy Pakistan Mission formally started in schools in 2010, and has been led by Wasim Akram as the brand ambassador. The objective of this mission was to empower students and teachers to bring about a habit change in their schools. Most ambitious students across Pakistan were selected as the vice-captains of Wasim Akram and were entrusted with the task of rolling out this mission in their schools. The slogan for the campaign is “Healthy Hoga Pakistan!”

With the help of an NGO (Idara-e-Taleem-o-Agahi), Lifebuoy gathered more than 2500 schools and over 700,000 students on a single platform, in 2011. As a result, thousands of families automatically participated in this campaign and pledged to wash their hands with soap. The main aim of this campaign is to change people’s hand-washing behavior and encourage them to use soap on key occasions of the day (Before each meal, After the loo, during shower).

Students are involved in a full-year hand-washing campaign led by Lifebuoy. This campaign will continue to run across Pakistan in the years to come and this year also includes the celebration of Global Hand washing Day (GHD), which took place on October 15th.

Today’s (18th October, 2011) event is being conducted to present awards to those students and teachers who have taken this mission to their hearts and have out-shined others to lead our march towards a Healthy Pakistan! The highlight of the event was the presence of the Chief Guest and Brand Ambassador of Lifebuoy, Wasim Akram who stressed on the importance of washing hands on key occasions of the day, staying clean and fit in order to become a healthy and strong citizen of the country.

Following his address to the audience, prizes were distributed to the Vice-captains of the schools who took charge of this programme in their schools and made a vital impact to the lives of their friends and families.

The Lifebuoy team’s mission is to change the behaviour of 68 Million people by 2015, by promoting the “Lifebuoy way” of using soap during the key moments for prevention of 10 common infections.
